Suburban Aquaponics Benefits of Indoor and Outdoor Gardening

,

Knowing the benefits of indoor gardening and outdoor gardening really helps when deciding which plants to grow in your aquaponics system, and which plants to plant outside.

Indoor gardening can be ideal during the colder months, and you have full control over the elements.  You decide when the lights come on, how much humidity, and the temperature.  Also, there are no pesky bugs to eat your plants.

Outdoors is wonderful, too.  You have all the light you need, height for tall plants, and room to plant whatever you want.

As with anything, you need to keep in mind the climate where you live, the length of your growing season, and available yard space for your garden.  We hope this video helps you plan out your own gardens, and maybe even consider an aquaponics system!  Click HERE for more information on aquaponics.

Suburban Aquaponics Moving Outdoor Plants Indoors

,

Check out this video to see how we are getting a longer growing season out of some of our summer plants. The cold weather came early this year up in Michigan and we had a few plants that we didnt get to see much production from. Our Bell peppers plants just didnt grow very well this year and ended up getting over crowded in our square foot gardens. Since we have the aquaponics system going year round it makes it easy to grab anything from the garden at the end of the season that we want to keep going and plant it inside. I have had pretty good luck so far growing indoors with this system and it is so easy to transplant into and out of the aquaponics!

I have had the best luck transplanting plants into the system but no the best of luck transplanting out if it. Once most plants get used to the lazy lifestyle of the easy aquaponics growing they dont like to get back into a regular dirt situation. While growing in the system they have easy access to water and nutrients and dont develop very deep thick roots like they would in dirt. So when you move most plants out of the system into a normal garden they have a lower survival rate. I have been able to move out some apple tress that were in the system for awhile but trees develop much differently than most other plants.

Building a Giant Outdoor Jenga Game

,

Back in June, I dropped our oldest daughter off at her girlfriends house for a pool party.  They had the COOLEST giant Jenga game setup on the deck next to their pool.   I came home and told my husband I just had to have one for our pool deck.  I had never seen one before, but after some research, the idea is actually all over Pinterest.  But here is our overview of that simple (and extremely repetitive) project.  Todd even pulled in our daughters to help as well and they really enjoyed getting to use power tools.

The game is basically sixty 10.5" long 2 x 4s.  Sixty boards are stacked three per row, for a total of 20 rows high.  This was the most repetitive project!  Every board gets measured, cut, sanded and stained.

Here are the rough cut 10.5" boards.

Then, each board gets the edges rounded with a belt sander.  My belt sander is held up by my vice so that our daughter could sand easily.

Our oldest then sanded each board with a finishing sander.

And then we stained each board with linseed oil.

I think the oil gave it a nice finish, dont you?

We constructed this game from standard pine 2 x 4s and used a total of 8 boards, including a few mess-ups and waste from knots in the wood. We spent about $40 total on the game including some sand paper and the linseed oil to stain the wood.

If you are looking for an easy and fun project this is perfect! It was a blast to build and the girls really enjoyed putting it together.

Outdoor Wood Burning Garage Heater Heat Your Garage For Free Using a C

,

Recently I made a homemade outdoor wood burning boiler system to heat our garage. I have been excited to get this put together ever since I built our wood burning pool heater earlier this spring. I realized that with the same setup I was using for the pool, I could also heat water for an indoor heat system. All I needed was some sort of indoor radiator and fan and some underground tubing to cycle the water through.
I am planning to expand my small garage wood shop this winter and did not want to have to run an electric heater all the time to heat the garage. My other options were to purchase a small propane heater, kerosene heater, or some other type of more powerful heat system but those can be expensive.  So, I decided on the wood burning heater instead. In most cases people will just put the barrel stove right in the garage, and that is a very efficient way of heating. However, my insurance company would not allow any wood burning stove (especially a homemade stove) inside the home. So this is where the wood burning boiler system design works the best. Although it is not quite as efficient as having the wood burner right in the garage it works very well to heat up our small insulated garage.

Weve been running it for approximately three weeks now, and with the temperatures dropping like they have, were really happy with the results.

For information on how I built this system, watch the video below.  Thanks for watching!

Setting Up an Aquaponic Farm

Within a world where almost everything is completed around the run and more and much more individuals complain about their lack of time, starting a new activity seems as a way of social suicide (youll have significantly less time for you to see your pals and your family). This can be why a lot of individuals are quite reluctant in giving their valuable time away on new activities, specifically if that new activity is gardening. But, what I need to propose you is one thing simpler, which even even though is a way of growing crops, has nothing else to complete with gardening. Its referred to as aquaponics and its the easiest method to have fresh food on your table.

Aquaponics can be a system which involves growing fish in regular tanks and employing their water, filled with bio-nutrients inside a program similar with that promoted by hydroponics. The top point about aquaponics is which you is not going to must care for the plants, because the fish will offer them sufficient food to develop and create properly. Youll just must care for your fish, which will also take significantly less time as you are going to only have to monitor the water and feed them. There is certainly no want to change or clean the water as this is something which your plants will do.

Having A Historical View On Experimental Hydroponics

Experimental hydroponics have appeared in the 17th century when biologists found that plants can develop with out soil. From that moment on, many experimental hydroponics projects happen to be initiated in an effort to improve the method. Even when it experimental hydroponics possess a lengthy history, the genuine progress within the field appeared right after 1970 when plastics began to become utilised lowering technological expenses and stimulating farmers to consider the systems viability.

A historical view on experimental hydroponics

The first experimental hydroponics project from Europe was began in England and shortly right after that in France. Increasing mint was the very first such profitable project initiated in 1699. Later in 1860 then in 1938 different strategies have been developed in Germany. In US experimental hydroponics was founded in 1925; researches continued using a smaller sized interest until 1970 when plastic was found permitting low expense systems to be effortlessly implemented. Following plastic became a common thing, experimental hydroponics extended to Europe and Asia.

Arid regions from around the globe like Iran, Arizona or Abu Dhabi have been used for implementing experimental hydroponics in an effort of combining the benefits of solar radiation with all the humidity offered by hydroponics; the primary advantage of hydroponics is the fact that it uses 90% significantly less water than conventional soil agriculture.

From 1973 when oil cost began to rise numerous investors lost their interest in experimental hydroponics, particularly in US; bankruptcy and several financial difficulties followed for a lot of experimental hydroponics program owners. A productive investigation in hydroponics was produced in 1983 and 1985 and also the interest within the topic was reestablished. At present when the concern to reduce the level of chemical treatment options applied to classic crops is rising, experimental hydroponics has began to receive a good deal far more income in an work to grow crops clean from ecological imbalances along with other soil associated difficulties.

What else may be stated about experimental hydroponics?

Numerous systems have been implemented to study plant wellness in an experimental hydroponics atmosphere, and test the viability of an investment. It really is common practice to invest inside a modest experimental hydroponics model that will predict the accomplishment of the project. As a general rule hydroponics is actually a very good enterprise when the developing crops cannot be developed on the local industry by classic soil agriculture. In direct competition from comparable soil crops, a hydroponic farmer doesnt stand a likelihood, but in the absence of a valid soil culture, hydroponics is unparalleled.
