Aquaponics System Design Setup and Maintenance Costs

This aquaponics project has been one of the most interesting and rewarding things that I have ever built and I never could have imagined how it would have turned out over a year ago when I got the idea. My wife and I were looking for ways to be more sustainable and wanted to get more into gardening and growing our own food in the upcoming year. We had watched a few documentaries on food production, organic food, sustainability, and a few other related topics and were becoming more and more interested. We also kept finding it hard for us to eat healthy foods on a budget when it seems like the healthier you try to eat the more and more expensive it becomes. That is when we decided to start into this aquaponics adventure and let me tell you, it has been an adventure!




I have been running the system in the basement now for coming up on a year now and have recently completed all of the grow lights and grow media needed for full production. I have had a lot of questions surrounding the various costs and upkeep of the indoor aquaponics system and so I thought I would provide as much detail as possible on that. There are two categories of cost to set up something like this, maintenance costs and the one time setup costs to build the system. I will start with the setup costs listed below. I have also included links to many of the items on Amazon that I used in the system.

Setup costs -

Total system build cost - $602

When we originally planned to build this system we had budgeted about $400 and thought I could have it all setup in a couple of weeks. Well, as my wife always tells me "figure twice as much and twice as long". It wasnt quite twice as much but it surely took twice as long to build it! Now, many of you are saying "$600, that is a lot for growing some lettuce in your basement!". At first thought, you are right, it is a lot of money. However, if you are looking to build something similar you do not have to be as elaborate as this setup, there are many ways to cut costs as I discuss in the video further. There are cheaper bulkheads, lights, and other components that you can choose from and if you put this in a greenhouse you can cut that cost in half. This setup has been such an amazing experience for me though, I would have paid twice that to do it again.




 To justify the cost think of it like this, how much do you pay for organic vegetables? How much do you spend on other hobbies such as golf, bowling, sports, games, and other things that you probably dont need. What is it worth for you to have year round vegetables available for you to pick right off of the stem? For us it is a no brainer, it is worth every penny! Once the system is setup the running costs are minimal and the production is just getting started here so lets see how much food we can produce!

Now, on to the matter of running costs. Many people have asked about the lights and what they cost to run as well as the rest of the system. I have  made some estimations here and attempted to calculate an accurate monthly cost to run this system. The calculations are based on 12 hour run times on the lights at .13 cents per kwh (kilowatt hour).

Running costs -

Lights - There are 32 light bulbs combined between all four lights. Each light consumes 23 watts of power for a total of 736 watts. This can be converted into kwh by first converting 736 watts into kw (kilowatts) 736/1000 = .74 kw. this can then be converted into kwh (kilowatt hours) by multiplying by the number of hours the lights are run. I normally run the lights for 12 hours so that makes .74 X 12 for a total of 8.8 kwhs. I currently am paying about .13 cents per kwh with my power company so to calculate the total cost per day I take 8.8 X .13 = $1.14. For one month that is about $34.

Pumps - I have one small air pump and a small water pump, both are estimated at less 12 watts combines power consumption. Using the same calculations as above (((12/1000 * 24)*30) it comes out to about $1.13 per month.

Aquarium heater - This is estimated at about 300kwh per year based on running it at about 70 degrees. Using the same calculations as above ((300 X .13)/12) that comes out to $3.25 per month.

Total month costs - $34+$1.13+$3.25 = $38.38.




 So for just over $1 per day you can have fresh produce growing right in your home 365 days a year! When you relate the monthly cost to so many of the other things that we pay monthly for, Netflix, cable bills, cell phones, data plans, XM radio, hobbies, and other unnecessary things you can easily justify growing your own food indoors. In the end it comes down to what is important to you and your family, yes we can go out and buy fresh produce in the winter. But, where does it come from? Mexico, Brazil, some other far away country? How long has that been frozen or in a truck or airplane? What chemicals were put on it to make it look nice for you at the store? The ultimate goal for us here is to grow enough in the summer to get us through the winter through preserving and canning our fresh food. However, this system will always have a place in our home producing fish and produce for us year round! I hope this info has helped you in your own aquaponics build, happy building!

Aquaponics System Design Overview of System Upkeep and Maintenance

How much time does maintaining an indoor garden take? Check out this video to see some of the ways in which I have found to keep upkeep of the indoor aquaponics system to a minimum.

When I first started thinking about setting up an aquaponics system in our basement I had a few reservations. After all, this was kind of a big commitment! Once you have fish and plants growing you cant just decide that you dont have enough time to maintain it and let it all go to heck. So, when designing this system I had that thought in mind.




The first concern I had was leaks and preventing a catastrophe if something sprung a hole. The way that the system is setup no matter what happens the fish tanks can never drain of water. There is no chance of a siphon with the solids lifting overflows and the bulkhead adapter goes though the barrel just a few inches from the top making that the lowest point the water can drain if the rest of the system losses all water. The plants can survive for 24 hours or more with no water so no matter what I was safe from any unforeseen issues.


The next thing that I was not looking forward to was topping off the system with water all of the time. If you add too much it might overflow when all the beds drain at once, too little and the whole system stops functioning as the bell siphons cant start. The solution was the automatic top off system. I installed a small float valve in the bottom of the sump tank a few inches from the bottom. This float adds water only when the level drops below the float during the fill and drain cycles of the sump tank. This setup prevents me from ever having to worry about the water fill in the system, it is always at the correct level, automatically, with no intervention by me. This setup has worked flawlessly and saved me so much hassle!

The next thing was cleaning. I did not want to have to spend a whole lot of time each week or month cleaning tanks and grow beds. The first thing I knew I needed was a swirl filter. Once that was in place I also wanted an easy way to clean that! I added a "pool vacuum" inspired hose to the filter so that I can open a valve on the bottom and then siphon off the waste from the bottom of the filter ever couple of weeks. I can send it off a floor drain or save the fertilizer for the gardens or indoor plants. This setup has saved me so much time and made siphoning off some nutrients for the garden so easy!

When I first started I didnt know much about water quality and testing and wondered how often I would need to test the system. I have learned that once the system is setup there is not really much to do as far as testing for Ammonia, Nitrite, or Nitrates goes. I have barely ever used these tests at all since the first few weeks. I do use the pH test kit the most and the system does need to be checked every week or two. This only takes a few minutes and then if needed I can add some egg shells to adjust the pH up a bit when needed. This has proved to be very easy and does not consume much time at all.




At  first I was manually turning on the grow lights in the morning and back off at night. I quickly realized that a timer was necessary after leaving the lights on over night and forgetting to turn them on a few times. Luckily I had an old lamp timer laying around and made quick work of settings this up to control all four grow lights. This automation has proved to be a requirement.



I added compost worms to the grow beds a few months back in the hopes that they will help take care of cleaning any organic matter that gets through the swirl filter into the grow beds as well as roots and other plant material. This should help increase the time between having to clean out the grow beds and I am hoping to be able to go a couple of years before that will be needed.

Cooling Season Tips Tricks Annual Air Conditioning Maintenance

There are a few simple steps to follow when getting your home A/C unit ready to fire up for the season. The first thing to check is the outside condenser unit. This tends to get the most wear and tear since it is sitting outside. There are many different types of these units depending on where you live in the country or the world but they all have a few things in common.

1.) Check the electrical disconnect for wasps! They seem to love to get in here and make a nest so early in the year it is a good idea to check this and make sure no nesting has begun. You should also inspect the "Line set" or refrigerant lines connecting from the inside of the home to the outside condenser. The larger one should be well insulated from the outside air so make sure that the insulation has not come off or deteriorated. If so, replace with correct size rubber pipe insulation from your local hardware.

2.) Clean the condenser unit. The easiest way to do this is to use your garden hose. Start at the top and spray down at an angle toward the ground back and forth until you get to the bottom. Repeat this to clean and debris and dust from the fins on all sides.

3.) Moving inside the first thing to do is replace or clean your air filter depending on the type you have. If you are using the cheap ones like I have in our home you need to change the twice per season or four times per year. This is important! If you do not change the filter you are lower the efficiency of the unit and costing yourself more money!

4.)  Turn off your humidifier if you have one. This usually requires doing two things. If your model has an air flow bypass there should be a damper that needs to be turned off. You also need to turn the humidistat off, usually setting to 0 or in OFF position. This prevents water from just running through to the drain all season long.

5.) The last thing that I normally do is balance the air flow to the house. This isnt as complicated as it might sound and just requires a bit of forethought and knowing where the dampers are located. Each air vent in your home will have a corresponding 6" pipe coming off of the main "truck" line duct. Each one of these should have a damper located near the trunk line. It is best to figure out where each one of these leads and then label them to make this process easier each year. For the cooling season you want to force most of the air to the upper floors of your home so it is best to close all dampers and registers that feed air to the basement. I also close off the ones leading to our bathrooms as I dont see the need to cool these tiny rooms where you dont spend much time (hopefully). I also reduce the air flow to about 50% to all of my 1st floor registers and then make sure all of the second floor are full open. Now if you only have one floor just make sure the 1st floor is all open and the basement is all closed. If you have trouble with humidity in the basement you can leave one or two vents open down there to keep the moisture down.

If you follow these simple steps each year when you fire up that A/C unit you will be on the way to a much cooler and cheaper cooling season! It is also a great idea to raise the thermostat temp during the day or when you are not at home and then lower it at night or when you need the cooling the most. This can make a huge difference in your bill!.
